I really did have every intention of watching a film every day in August, and then the wifi didn’t work for two weeks. Streaming anything is still rather iffy. I got round to watching 5 films in these 31 days. This is not fine film journalism, these are the thoughts I had, they were not worth a video, so enjoy the blog.
I have included below the list of everything I intended to watch as many films were suggested by my followers over in instagram @sarcastic_fish. This September I’m trying again and I’ve started with the new series of Pealy Blinders, okay not films but any excuse to watch Cillian Murphy act. Also I love that show and the whole thing about subtitling it for American audiences was hilarious. Let’s see how many we get through this month!
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) – Dir. Stanley Kubrick
wat, bizarre, THE FUCKING MONKEY MASKS WTF, I hate sci fi, wat, music, circles, evil computers, I get so many references now, people just love different stuff, love the zero gravity shots inside tho that’s fun, colourful, I mean the sound design is interesting for sure, no free will for computers, fucking sKYNET, mom come pick me up, NOTHING HAPENS JTS A THREE HOHHR LONG FILM AND NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS, space ships with rogue aliens are better
Mean Streets (1973) – Dir. Martin Scorsese
oh my god young de niro what, he’s 29 tho, that tan line on her ass tho, those collars, Scorsese’s never one to miss a creative camera angle, love the drunk bit (lol I felt a bit sick) he does have fun with the music, the fights are so much more scuffly and feel so much realer as a result
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) – Dir. Wes Anderson
I really enjoyed it, I can see the ways some people might find it unsatisfactory, but it’s a very pleasing film to look at, very cheeky, I could say such wanky things about the cRaFt Of FiLmAkInG, but for real, it’s like watching a cartoon, what rules
Donnie Darko (2001) – Dir. Richard Kelly
Eh, like I really did wanna watch it? Idk I thought I’d be darker in different ways. Film did not age well, at the time with the plane and then now with the guns. We watched the directors cut, still a confusing film and I don’t think it has that much momentum so yeah you get annoyed when you’ve only made it an hour in lol. Like if you want something different sure watch it but idk if it’s “essential cinema” and lol it has Seth rogan in it. An interesting directorial debut at least ALSO THE MOTHER WAS READING ‘IT’ IN THE OPENING SCENE.
Total Recall (1990) – Dir. Paul Verhoeven
hahaha what have I just signed up for. Sharon stone is beautiful. His muscles are like another character like damn. Hahaha he just used that dude as a human shield. That was good, that was really great, I enjoyed that, I love when you never get the answer to the overarching question, like at the end of Inception, you don’t need to know one way or the other if he is or isn’t dreaming because it doesn’t matter and it keeps you engaged for the entire film and after as a result. we all love arguing our theories and thinking we’re right and why. like if you’re watching a film with a friend and have nothing to say to each other and totally agree at the end like dude that’s dull
Have I on adding all of the details to this post realised every single film I watched was written by, directed by, and follows a male protagonist? Yes. Does it actually suck. Yes.
